The number of people looking for work is on the rise in the UK, but the demand for retail jobs has been falling for years.
The latest data from the National Living Wage Foundation suggests that vacancy rates have dropped by around 15 per cent since 2010, but many of these jobs remain unfilled.
With unemployment rates at the lowest they have been in decades, people are desperate to find a way to make ends meet.
“The unemployment rate in this country is still lower than in a number of developed countries,” says the organisation’s CEO Mark Williams.
But they do want to look for jobs. “
There are some people that just don’t want to do it.
“In some ways, we’ve become more like China, where you can look and say, ‘I’ll be out there, I’ll get a job, and I’ll be able to feed my family and I can be comfortable in a family life’,” he says. “
The UK has the second-highest unemployment rate of any developed country in the world, with the number of unemployed people falling by more than 50,000 in the past year alone. “

Many people are still living at home, and many are struggling to find work in the retail sector.
“You don’t see that many people walking through the doors, so many people are walking into the doors of the supermarkets, and you can’t see how many people really want to go back to work,” Mr Williams says.
“So, the demand is very strong, and the supply is very, very low.”
With the number in the workforce shrinking, people looking to sell their home are finding it harder to find the work they want, which is leaving many empty-nesters.
“It’s very hard to get a vacancy in a market like that,” Mr Robinson says.
With more and more people working from home, the UK is now the only developed country that does not offer full-time employment to all its citizens.
“We’re doing a terrible job,” Mr Davis says.
Many are forced to make do with low-paid, temporary work.
In the case of the Australian Government’s proposed minimum wage increase, many people working in retail and hospitality will be affected.
“People are going to find it hard to find jobs, and that’s going to have a knock-on effect on the retail industry,” Mr Moore says.
It’s not just retailers that are struggling, as many young people are also struggling.
“I’m 18 now, and it’s hard for me to get my mind off the fact that I’m going to be going to university for my masters and I have to leave my home town and go into a city and have to go to work somewhere else,” Mr Jones says.
But, he also says he wants to see a more inclusive economy for all.
“To have a country where we all have the same opportunities and we all share the same freedoms,” he says, “then it’s important to have people who are doing well, but they’re not doing so well because of the job they’re doing.”
